Harimau Muda A, or Malaysia national under-22 football team also known as Malaysia U-22, represents Malaysia in international football competitions such as AFC Youth Championship, Champions Youth Cup and as well as any other under-22 international football tournaments. It is controlled by the Football Association of Malaysia. The team is considered to be the feeder team for the Malaysia U-23 and senior national football teams. It is for players aged 21 and less until the aged of 19 while Harimau Muda B is in charged of the under-19 players. Harimau Muda A will participate in the 2012 S. League replacing Young Lions.
The team is aimed at developing Malaysian youth players and will not recruit any foreign nationals in its squad.
The name "Harimau Muda" means "Young Tigers" in English.
Formation
On October 19, 2007 FAM decided to include Malaysia U-21 as one of the team in 2007–08 Premier League Malaysia and will be known as Harimau Muda (Young Tigers). Due to international duties, the Malaysia national U-21 team were needed to participate in the 2010 AFC U-19 Championship qualification. In local competition, they participated in the Premier League and the FA Cup.
The Harimau Muda were split in to 2 teams on July 2009, Harimau Muda A and Harimau Muda B. The Harimau Muda B were sent to Zibo, China to participate in the 2010 AFC U-19 Championship qualification and Harimau Muda A was to participate in the Premier League and FA Cup.
During the 2010 season, Harimau Muda A went to a training camp in Zlaté Moravce, Slovakia for 8 months while Harimau Muda B participated in the 2010 Malaysia Premier League.
After the stint in Slovakia, Harimau Muda A joined the 2011 Super League Malaysia replacing KL PLUS FC and Harimau Muda B continued to play in the Malaysia Premier League. Harimau Muda A finished 5th while Harimau Muda B played their worst season being in the bottom 3. However, they managed to avoid relegation and will continue to play in the Malaysia Premier League.
For the 2012 season, Harimau Muda A swapped places with the Young Lions of Singapore, which is made up of the Singapore's national under-23 team. Young Lions will replace Harimau Muda A in the Super League while the Harimau Muda A will replace the Young Lions in the S. League. Harimau Muda B will continue to participate in the Malaysia Premier League.

Dengan skuad B-23 kebangsaan yang akan berlepas ke Sukan Asia 2018 Indonesia hari ini, Datuk Ong Kim Swee akan menjadi ketua jurulatih pertama dalam sejarah bola sepak Malaysia untuk mengendalikan skuad B-23 kebangsaan di kejohanan Sukan Asia dua kali berturut-turut (2014 & 2018)

FAM tak sambung kontrak Kim Swee![]()

KUALA LUMPUR: Kegagalan skuad Sukan SEA negara melepasi peringkat kumpulan terpaksa dibayar harga mahal oleh pengendalinya, Datuk Ong Kim Swee apabila Persatuan Bolasepak Malaysia (FAM) mengambil keputusan tidak menyambung kontraknya.
Setiausaha Agung FAM, Stuart Ramalingam ketika mengesahkan perkara itu berkata, kontrak semasa pengendali dari Melaka itu akan tamat hujung bulan ini namun FAM bercadang untuk terus mengekalkan Kim Swee dalam sistem bola sepak negara.
Menurutnya, pihaknya tidak boleh menafikan sumbangan pengendali itu dan sebab itu langkah untuk mengekalkan Kim Swee dalam sistem bola sepak negara adalah wajar.
"Kontraknya bersama skuad bawah 22 (B-22) tidak akan disambung. Dalam masa sama FAM begitu menghargai pengalaman dan ilmu yang dimiliki Kim Swee.
"Kita jangan lupakan sumbangannya kepada bola sepak Malaysia dan juga buat FAM. Kita tidak akan lupa semua itu dan mungkin ada tempat lain (yang boleh diisi oleh Kim Swee) dalam struktur bola sepak negara.
"Kita mahu terus manfaatkan pengalaman dan ilmu dimilikinya," kata Stuart ketika dihubungi sebentar tadi.
