"If you ever have the chance to test one, a thermostat is an amazing thing to watch because what it does seems impossible. You can put one in a pot of boiling water on the stove. As it heats up, its valve opens about an inch, apparently by magic! If you'd like to try this yourself, go to a car parts store and buy one for a couple of bucks.

The secret of the thermostat lies in the small cylinder located on the engine-side of the device. This cylinder is filled with a wax that begins to melt at around 180 F (different thermostats open at different temperatures, but 180 F is a common one). A rod connected to the valve presses into this wax. When the wax melts, it expands significantly, pushing the rod out of the cylinder and opening the valve. If you have read How Thermometers Work and done the experiment with the bottle and the straw, you have seen this process in action -- the wax just expands a good bit more because it is changing from a solid to a liquid in addition to expanding from the heat.

This same technique is used in automatic openers for greenhouse vents and skylights. In these devices, the wax melts at a lower temperature. "

" Temperatures in the combustion chamber of the engine can reach 4,500 F (2,500 C), so cooling the area around the cylinders is critical. Areas around the exhaust valves are especially crucial, and almost all of the space inside the cylinder head around the valves that is not needed for structure is filled with coolant. If the engine goes without cooling for very long, it can seize. When this happens, the metal has actually gotten hot enough for the piston to weld itself to the cylinder. This usually means the complete destruction of the engine.

One interesting way to reduce the demands on the cooling system is to reduce the amount of heat that is transferred from the combustion chamber to the metal parts of the engine. Some engines do this by coating the inside of the top of the cylinder head with a thin layer of ceramic. Ceramic is a poor conductor of heat, so less heat is conducted through to the metal and more passes out of the exhaust. "


Dan satu lagi yg penting tapi tak di titik beratkan ialah penutup radiator kerana penutup yg lama mungkin tidak berfungsi dgn baik. Sila baca artikel di bawah :

" Pressure Cap (Radiator Cap)

The radiator cap actually increases the boiling point of your coolant by about 45 F (25 C). How does this simple cap do this? The same way a pressure cooker increases the boiling temperature of water. The cap is actually a pressure release valve, and on cars it is usually set to 15 psi. The boiling point of water increases when the water is placed under pressure.

When the fluid in the cooling system heats up, it expands, causing the pressure to build up. The cap is the only place where this pressure can escape, so the setting of the spring on the cap determines the maximum pressure in the cooling system. When the pressure reaches 15 psi, the pressure pushes the valve open, allowing coolant to escape from the cooling system. This coolant flows through the overflow tube into the bottom of the overflow tank. This arrangement keeps air out of the system. When the radiator cools back down, a vacuum is created in the cooling system that pulls open another spring loaded valve, sucking water back in from the bottom of the overflow tank to replace the water that was expelled.

nak tambah sikit..pasal overheat

Secara keseluruhan Carnival/Ria tidak mempunyai masalah engine overheat kalau engine berkeadaan baik. Kalau engine ok, kat gurun padang pasir sekali pon temperature gauge nya akan maintain slightly below than half notch.

Setengah kenderaan terutama kereta continental yg dimport perlu modification pada cooling system to suit our climate. Tapi tidak untuk Carnival/Ria.

Mari kita senaraikan mengapa enjin Carnival/ria boleh overheat.

1.t-joint pecah
2.Cooling fan faulty.
3.Kebocoran pada hose menerusi wear & tear
4.kebocoran pada radiator menerusi wear & tear.
5.Hose tercabut dlm reservoir (tempat top-up air). Untuk makluman, jika hose dlm reservoir tu tercabut., air dlm reservoir ni akan sentiasa penuh malah akan bertambah. Fungsi hose adalah digunakan sebagai returnkan coolant ke radiator. Iaitu when engine is warm, coolant will be pushed to the reservoir & while engine is cool, some coolant will return back to the radiator. jadi owner sangka air dlm radiator sentiasa penuh jiak hose dlm resevor ni tercabut.
6.Getah di radiator cap pecah, no 5 di atas tidak akan berfungsi.
7.Thermostat jammed.
8.Owner gatal-gatal nak flushing sendiri cooling system & tak membuat bleeding dengan betul. Bila tak buat bleeding dgn betul, ada ruang dlm cooling system coolant tak sampai.(creating air bubbles) Jadi panas la engine tu.

yeap betul tu, ada kemahuan ada kejayaan. Pengalaman saya sendiri juga sejak mula Naza ria mula perkenalkan saya mulai menaruh minat padanya dan berkat sabar. Alhamdulilah syukur akhirnya dapat memilikinya jua. (" mcm nak tackle awek buat bini juga nie kaedahnya") hehehehehh

Sembang2 pasal thermostat & certain things to ponder

Salah satu sebab engine overheat adalah disebabkan oleh thermostat jammed (jammed at close position). Jadi coolant tak dapat flow.

oleh itu utk mengelak dari engine overheat, ramai lah w/shop kasi buang thermostat ni.


letting the engine warm up as quickly as possible, the thermostat reduces engine wear, reduce deposits & emissions. Benar ke statement ni?

Persoalannya, benar ke tidak, mengunakan thermostat engine akan wear, deposits & pencemaran/emissions akan berlaku. Kan lebih bagus tiada mengunakan thermostat engine lebih sejuk dan masaalah overheat tak akan berlaku.

1. engine wear

Salah satu sebabnya ialah if you don't, the engine heats unevenly, which means it wears unevenly. A cool running engine does not heat the oil sufficiently; you will get sludge build-up in the pan. In long run worse part of it the oil pump filter will choke/sumbat and affect the lubricating system. A hotter running engine at normal operating temperature is better on the oil viscosity & characteristics.

2. deposits in radiator.

a. If thermostat is not used, flow rate of the coolant will be faster. Segala kekotoran yg melekat berada di dalam engine block akan ditendang keluar menyebabkan radiator akan tersumbat. Pada peringkat awal thermostat di tanggalkan anda akan lihat air yang berkarat akan keluar bersama-sama kekotoran. Lama kelamaan anda akan mengalami engine overheat yg terok. kerana radiator akan tersumbat.

b. Tekanan yg rendah di dalam engine block dan dengan kelajuan flow coolant ini, coolant ini tidak sempat untuk menyejuk kawasan2 yg kritikal yg memang memerlukan coolant ini. Dlm jangka panjang akan merosakkan internal parts of the engine.

c. Dengan kelajuan coolant yg di pump oleh water pump, pressure di dalam water passage (laluan coolant yg kecil) terutatam Naza Ria yg mempunyai dua cylinder head dalam cooling system ini, ade yg tidak sempat return ke radiator untuk melalui proses penyejukan. So uneven heat berlaku di dalam engine tersebut tanpa disedari.

d. Dengan kelajuan coolant berserta pressure yg rendah yg di pump oleh water pump, temperature indicator di dashboard tidak mempamirkankan temperature yg sebenar kerana engine heats unevenly and the temp is always vary/tak tetap.

3. emissions

Carburetor type & fuel injection type perlu di ambil kira dlm mengendalikan thermostat ini. Carburetor type kebanyakkannya tiada sensor-sensor terdapat the engine tersebut.

Another problem is that a colder engine burns more fuel and wears at a faster rate than an engine at normal temperature.

Salah satu kegunaan thermostat untuk engine EFI ialah to ensure efficient combustion and reduced emissions. ECU amat memerlukan temperature yg tepat dari sensors-sensors seperti temperature sensor dan oxygen sensor dll sensors.

False signal from sensors akan berlaku jika engine tidak reaches to its normal operating temperature, temperature sensor akan send false signal to ECU bahawa engine dlm keadan sejuk dan ini akan menyebabkan the all the six injectors to stay open longer to inject fuel (kira macam pakai choke memanjang ajer dlm kerera yg pakai carburetor). Ini menyebab poor emission dan poor fuel economy.

Jika kepanasan engine tidak di capai seperti yg dah di programkan dalam ECU, Sensor seperti Oxygen sensor (walaupon jenis heated oxygen sensor) akan berada di dalam opened-loop (makna nya sensor ini tak digunakan oleh ECU selagi O2 sensor ni tidak mencapai kepanasan yg diperlukan utk detect oxygen dlm exhaust system and to run in closed loop.) Menyebabkan fuel consumption akan bertambah.

Kesan dari false signal mungkin Vehicle emissions may also be affected and the Check Engine light may come on. Apabila check engine light ini menyala, ECU akan run in “safe mode” dan Ria ni akan operating poorly.

Dual speed fan yg terdapat dlm NAza Ria juga akan terganggu. Mungkin high speed fan ini tidak ade peluang utk berfungsi membantu penyejukan terutama utk menyejuk engine dan minyak hitam yg tersangat panas. Terutama apabila engine yg baru di offkan kan dan sertamerta ingin di On kan semula, minyak hitam dan coolant akan terlampau panas. Pada ketika ini high speed fan amat diperlukan tapi tidak dapat berfungsi kerana temperature sensor dalam coolant tidak mencapai range yg dikehendaki utk trigger 2nd speed tersebut.

During those first few minutes of driving that your car uses a lot of gas and creates a lot of pollution. Kalau tak ade thermostat lagi lah lambat engine panas. Why is this? Gasoline needs to be heated and turned into vapor for it to work in the engine.
