Carnival of classics at lake
WE are just two weeks away from a massive gathering of classic automobiles in Kuala Lumpur.
The Kuala Lumpur Grand Prix City Festival 2009 was launched by Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Taib together with the the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, Datuk Ahmad Fuad Ismail, at the Pavilion KL last week.
The 2009 theme is "Fully Seasoned - Attracting the World's Best to KL".
The "Fully Seasoned" phrase is coined to reflect Malaysia's vast experience in hosting the hottest race on earth, according to Noraza Yusof, general manager of the organisers, the Kuala Lumpur Tourism Action Council.
Out of the 12 spectacular events lined up for this festival, the two-day gathering of seasoned but pristine classic automobile at Lake Titiwangsa on
March 21 and 22 is expected to see throngs of motoring enthusiasts making a beeline to this "oasis" of Kuala Lumpur.
The first lake view display of automobiles will mark a new era in outdoor motoring shows in the country.
The first day of the event - the MBB (Minis, Beetles and Bikes) Big Day Out - is dedicated to fans of mass market classic vehicles like the Volkswagen Beetle, Mini, Vespa and Lambretta.
Many of us would have, in some point of our lives, either owned or had family members who owned such mass produced vehicles.
Fifty each of the Mini and Beetle would be put on display, courtesy of the Sports Mini Owners Club Malaysia and Classic Volkswagen Beetle Club of Malaysia. Both clubs are the only recognised national car clubs for the respective marques.
The Mayor of KL who formulated this joint VW-Mini-Vespa concept would like fans to come and celebrate the continued existence of these evergreen heritage vehicles.
One hundred each of the Vespa, Lambretta and classic big bikes would be brought to the show from various states by the Vespa Sport Ride Team, its affiliate clubs and the Brit Iron Classic Motorcycle Club of Malaysia.
Besides the wide array of collectible classics, the exhibition centre is also one of the highlights of the event.
The classic vehicle club stand would showcase most of the one-make motoring clubs in the country.
Memories of the Sixties come swinging back with the evergreen scooters of the Vespa Sport Ride Team.
Classic car restorers, Big Boys Rides and Ameuron Car Care would be there to give advice on classic car restoration.

While those keen on racing a classic may want to make a "pit-stop" at the Classic Car Club of Hong Kong and The Otomotif College (TOC) stands.
JP Chin of JP Motorsports and his team would be showcasing a couple of brand new Ford GT-40 replica cars at their booth.
Experience live detailing demonstration on a classic car by Matt Davies of Hong Kong at the Meguiars Malaysia space.
The CBT editorial team will also be there among the other classic car related entities.
The next day would see the grand display of the best vintage and classic cars from all around Malaysia and Singapore , after final selection of the successful entrants on March 11 .
