The third season of AMC's television series The Walking Dead is scheduled to premiere in fall 2012 and will feature 16 episodes. The series is based on the series of comic books of the same name by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard; it was developed for television by Frank Darabont, and is executive produced by Robert Kirkman and Glen Mazzara

The third season features six returning main characters from the previous two seasons. Andrew Lincoln portrays the series' protagonist Rick Grimes, a former deputy sheriff from King County, Georgia, who has established himself as the group's leader. Sarah Wayne Callies portrays Lori Grimes, Rick's wife and Carl's mother. Laurie Holden portrays Andrea, a former successful civil rights attorney, who was separated from the group at the end of the second season. Steven Yeun portrays Glenn, a former pizza delivery boy. Chandler Riggs portrays Carl Grimes, Rick and Lori's young son. Norman Reedus portrays Daryl Dixon, an emotionally insecure Southern redneck who's also the group's primary hunter.
Several recurring cast members are expected to return. Melissa McBride portrays Carol Peletier, a former victim of domestic abuse who is now the last surviving member of her family. IronE Singleton portrays Theodore "T-Dog" Douglas, a well-intentioned but clumsy survivor who struggles to prove his worth to the group. Scott Wilson portrays Hershel Greene, a religious man and trained veterinarian who owned a ranch where the group had stayed before it was overrun by walkers. Lauren Cohan portrays Maggie Greene, Hershel's tomboyish eldest daughter and Glenn's lover. Emily Kinney portrays Beth Greene, Hershel's emotionally troubled youngest daughter. Michael Rooker portrays Merle Dixon, an unruly Southern redneck and older brother to Daryl, who had gone missing in the first season .
Two new cast members have been added to the third season. David Morrissey will portray The Governor, a major antagonist in the comic series;. Danai Gurira will portray Michonne, the hooded figure that saves Andrea in the season two finale and a prominently featured character in the comic series.
Two main cast members who are not returning are: Jon Bernthal, who played Shane Walsh; and Jeffrey DeMunn as Dale Horvath; both characters were killed in the previous season.
AMC renewed The Walking Dead for a third season on October 25, 2011 after the season two premiere broke cable ratings records in the 18–49 demographic. On January 14, 2012, AMC announced that the third season will contain 16 episodes.
Filming will begin in May 2012 in Senoia, Georgia.

The name may only be familiar if you watch HBO’s New Orleans drama “Treme” because she’s appeared on six episodes, but Ms. Gurira has been making small appearances on television shows and in movies for years. Getting the gig as Michonne is huge and is very likely to make her a household name if the show keeps doing as well for AMC as it has the last two seasons.
To tie into her introduction on the show, there’s also a six-page Michonne origin story in the April issue of Playboy Magazine on newsstands now.
