Default TRANSCEND MTE850 M.2 NVMe SSD UNBOXING

The M.2 form factor is a heaven sent for most gamers; enabling them to experience the speed and convenience of the tiny interface. It is something that our usual 2.5” SATA drives couldn’t possibly do especially if we put space and convenience into consideration.

Those reasons alone piqued my interest at the Transcend MTE850. An M.2 SSD with a PCI-E 3.0 x4 interface, capable of reaching 2500 MB/s read and 1100 MB/s write speeds.

BUT WHY NVMe?
NVMe or NVM Express is one of the key factors to the MTE850’s strengths. NVMe reduces I/O overhead and brings various performance improvements compared to previous interfaces. That includes multiple, long command queues, and reduced latency over your typical SATA SSD. Basically, the only 2.5” form factor SSDs capable of matching the speeds of NVMe devices are SATAIII SSDs in RAID, SATA Express and U.2 SSDs. The last two are basically capable of utilizing the NVMe interface.

TIGHTLY PACKED
The Transcend MTE850 we got is the 128GB version. It is also available in 256GB and 512GB models whose far more suitable for storing games and applications that requires such capacities. The small package also has valuable information at the back which includes the specifications, serial and a small guide on how to install the drive.

The SSD is sandwiched between molded plastics which should keep it safe enough from harm. There’s also a warranty card which states the 3 year warranty and its limitations. Transcend also added a small pamphlet which contains their storage solutions for Apple products. There are no screws included so make sure to get yourself one if you’re going to install this on a notebook.

SPECIFICATIONS

SMALLER THAN A CREDIT CARD
The Transcend MTE850 features a 2280 M.2 form factor which should be compatible enough with most desktop systems – even notebooks. It is important to note that this SSD requires an M.2 slot that could support PCI-E 3.0 x4 drives. Otherwise, you’ll get lower performance or incompatibility issues at worst.

The heart of the Transcend MTE850 is the Silicon Motion SM2260 (SM2260G) controller; connecting the four 32GB 3D NAND flashes. The 3D MLC NAND flash chips used in Transcend's MTE850 offer vastly improved read and write speeds over 2D NAND. Low power consumption and excellent reliability are also hallmarks of 3D NAND, ensuring long-life dependability. Transcend's MTE850 is an excellent choice for gaming enthusiasts and others who require fast read and write speeds and unquestioned reliability.

Transcend had the NAND flashes situated at both sides of the PCB. The operating temperature is at 0°C - 70°C so there’s a lot of legroom. The MTE850 M.2 SSD is engineered with a RAID engine and LDPC (Low-Density Parity Check) coding, a powerful ECC algorithm, to keep data secure. Manufactured with top-tier MLC NAND flash chips, and engineered dynamic thermal throttling mechanism, the MTE850 is durablee and stable for high-end applications.

TRANSCEND SSD SCOPE SOFTWARE
Transcend's SSD Scope software application is available for download free of charge to keep your Transcend SSD running fast and error-free. Monitor your SSD's health status with S.M.A.R.T. technology, enable the TRIM command for optimum write speeds, keep your SSD's firmware up-to-date, and migrate data from your original drive to a new SSD with just a few clicks.

INSTALLATION AND PERFORMANCE OVERVIEW
Installing the drive is easy enough with desktops, as seen on my setup.

Here we will do a quick benchmark with CrystalDiskMark to measure sequential and random read/write speeds of MTE850 128GB.

The MTE850 M.2 NVMe 128GB SSD with a PCI-E 3.0 x4 interface beats out the SATA drives with its blazing speed performance.

FINAL THOUGHT
Transcend MTE850 is a high-speed SSD for users who need high speeds, but at the same time, have a limited budget. This model demonstrated itself very well both in normal use and under high loads, which is not always possible with models of other manufacturers working with SLC-caching. This SSD perfectly fits in PCs of any level - for simple tasks, and for demanding gamers and enthusiasts.
