TOOTHBRUSH

The toothbrush as we know it today was not invented until 1938. However, early forms of the toothbrush have been in existence since 3000 BC. Ancient civilizations used a "chew stick," which was a thin twig with a frayed end. These 'chew sticks' were rubbed against the teeth.

The bristle toothbrush, similar to the type used today, was not invented until 1498 in China. The bristles were actually the stiff, coarse hairs taken from the back of a hog's neck and attached to handles made of bone or bamboo.

Boar bristles were used until 1938, when nylon bristles were introduced by Dupont de Nemours. The first nylon toothbrush was called Doctor West's Miracle Toothbrush. Later, Americans were influenced by the disciplined hygiene habits of soldiers from World War II. They became increasingly concerned with the practice of good oral hygiene and quickly adopted the nylon toothbrush.

Some other interesting toothbrush facts:

The first mass-produced toothbrush was made by William Addis of Clerkenwald, England, around 1780.
The first American to patent a toothbrush was H. N. Wadsworth, (patent number 18,653,) on Nov. 7, 1857.
Mass production of toothbrushes began in America around 1885.
One of the first electric toothbrushes to hit the American market was in 1960. It was marketed by the Squibb company under the name Broxodent

MECHANICAL PENCIL

Slavoljub Eduard Penkala (April 20, 1871 – February 5, 1922) was an engineer and inventor from Croatia.

Eduard Penkala was born in Liptovský Mikuláš (in what is now Slovakia), to Franjo Penkala, who was Polish, and Maria Penkala (née Hannel), who was Dutch. He attended the University of Vienna and Technische Universität Dresden, graduating from the latter in 1898 and going on to earn a doctorate in organic chemistry. He then immigrated with his wife and family to Zagreb and subsequently added "Slavoljub" to his name, also becoming a naturalized Croat.

He became renowned for his invention of the first mechanical pencil (1906) – then called an "automatic pencil" – and the first solid-ink fountain pen (1907). Collaborating with an entrepreneur by the name of Edmund Moster, he started the Penkala-Moster Company and built a pen-and-pencil factory that was one of the biggest in the world at the time. This company, now called TOZ-Penkala, still exists today. TOZ stands for "Tvornica olovaka Zagreb," which means "Zagreb pencil factory."

He also constructed the first Croatian two-seat aeroplane in 1909, which Dragutin Novak, first Croatian pilot, used for his first flight. He constructed and invented many other products and devices, and held a total of 80 patents.

Among his patented inventions were:

a hot water bottle – his first patented invention, the "Termofor"
a type of bluing detergent
a rail-car brake
an anode battery
He also founded another company called the Elevator Chemical Manufacturing Company, which produced various chemicals such as detergents, sealing wax, and "Radium Vinovica", a patent-medicine-like product that was billed as curing rheumatism.

Penkala died in Zagreb at the age of 51, after coming down with pneumonia on a business trip.

LEVIS

Levi Strauss (February 26, 1829–September 26, 1902) was a German-born American clothing manufacturer.

Born as Löb Strauss into a Jewish family in Buttenheim in Franconia, Bavaria, now a part of Germany. In 1847, Strauss, his mother and two sisters moved to New York City to join his brothers Jonas and Louis Löb in their dry goods business. By 1850 he had adopted the name "Levi Strauss".

In 1853, Strauss moved to bustling San Francisco, California, where the California Gold Rush was still in high gear. Levi expected that the mining camps would welcome his buttons, scissors, thread and bolts of fabric; additionally, he had yards of canvas sailcloth intended for tent-making and as covers for the Conestoga wagons that dotted the landscape next to every stream and river in the area.

It was on California Street that Levi and his brother-in-law David Stern opened a dry goods wholesale business called Levi Strauss & Co. Levi was often found leading a pack-horse, heavily laden with merchandise, directly into the mining camps found throughout the region. The story goes that both prospectors and miners, often complaining about the easily torn cotton "britches" and pockets that "split right out" gave Levi the idea to make a rugged overall trouser for the miners to wear. These were fashioned from bolts of brown canvas sailcloth, with gold ore storage pockets that were nearly impossible to split. Levi exhausted his original supply of canvas as the demand grew for his hard-wearing overalls, and so he switched to a sturdy fabric called serge, made in Nimes, France. Originally called serge de Nimes, the name was soon shortened to denim.

In 1872, Levi received a letter from Jacob Davis, a Reno, Nevada tailor. Davis was one of Levi Strauss' regular customers, who purchased bolts of cloth from the company to use for his own business. In this letter, Davis told Levi about the interesting way in which he made pants for his customers: he placed metal rivets at the points of strain—pocket corners and on the base of the fly. As he did not have the money to patent his process he suggested that Levi pay for the paperwork and that they take out the patent together.

On May 20, 1873, Strauss and Jacob Davis received United States patent #139121 for using copper rivets to strengthen the pockets of denim work pants. Levi Strauss & Co. began manufacturing the first of the famous Levi's brand of jeans in San Francisco, using fabric from the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Levi Strauss died on September 26, 1902, at the age of 73. He left his thriving manufacturing and dry goods business to his four nephews—Jacob, Louis, Abraham and Sigmund Stern—who helped rebuild the company after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. The following year, Jacob Davis sold back his share of the company.

Peter Haas and his family are the primary heirs the to Levi Strauss fortune.

NI SEJARAHNYA PASAL SNOOKER

The game is generally regarded to have originated in the latter half of the 19th century.[6] Billiards had been a popular activity amongst British Army officers stationed in India, and variations on the more traditional billiard games were devised. One variation, devised in the officers' mess in Jabalpur during 1874[7] or 1875,[6] was to add coloured balls in addition to the reds and black which were used for pyramid pool and life pool.[8] The word snooker also has military origins, being a slang term for first-year cadets or inexperienced personnel.[6] One version of events states that Colonel Sir Neville Chamberlain of the Devonshire regiment was playing this new game when his opponent failed to pot a ball and Chamberlain called him a snooker.[8] It thus became attached to the billiards game now bearing its name as inexperienced players were labelled as snookers.[9]

The game of snooker grew in the latter half of the 19th century and the early 20th century, and by 1927 the first World Snooker Championship[6] had been organised by Joe Davis who, as a professional English billiards and snooker player, moved the game from a pastime activity into a more professional sphere.[10] Joe Davis won every world championship until 1946 when he retired. The game went into a decline through the 1950s and 1960s with little interest generated outside of those who played. Things saw some improvement when in 1969, when David Attenborough who was then a top official of the BBC, commissioned the snooker tournament Pot Black to demonstrate the potential of colour television, with the green table and multi-coloured balls being ideal for showing off the advantages of colour broadcasting.[11][4] The TV series became a ratings success and was for a time the second most popular show on BBC Two.[12] Interest in the game increased and the 1978 World Championship was the first to be fully televised.[13] [2] The game quickly became a mainstream sport[14] in the UK, Ireland and much of the Commonwealth and has enjoyed much success in the last 30 years, with most of the ranking tournaments being televised. In recent years the loss of tobacco sponsorship has led to a decrease in the number of professional tournaments, although some new sponsors have been sourced;[15] and the popularity of the game in the Far East and China, with emerging talents such as Liang Wenbo and more established players such as Ding Junhui and Marco Fu, bodes well for the future of the sport in that part of the world.[16][17]

ni plak pasal handphone :

In 1908, U.S. Patent 887,357 for a wireless telephone was issued in to Nathan B. Stubblefield of Murray, Kentucky. He applied this patent to "cave radio" telephones and not directly to cellular telephony as the term is currently understood.[49] Cells for mobile phone base stations were invented in 1947 by Bell Labs engineers at AT&T and further developed by Bell Labs during the 1960s. Radiophones have a long and varied history going back to Reginald Fessenden's invention and shore-to-ship demonstration of radio telephony, through the Second World War with military use of radio telephony links and civil services in the 1950s, while hand-held cellular radio devices have been available since 1973. Due to their low establishment costs and rapid deployment, mobile phone networks have since spread rapidly throughout the world, outstripping the growth of fixed telephony.[

LIQUID PAPER

Bette Nesmith Graham (23 March 1924 - 12 May 1980) was a typist, commercial artist, the inventor of Liquid Paper, and mother of musician and producer Michael Nesmith of The Monkees.

Graham was born in Corpus Christi, Texas. She married Warren Nesmith before he left for war, but they divorced in 1946. To support herself as a single mother, she worked as a secretary at a bank, eventually rising to the executive secretary (the highest position open to women in the industry).

It was very difficult to erase mistakes made by early electric typewriters, which caused problems for Graham. In order to make extra money, she used her talent for painting to do holiday windows at the bank. She realized, as she said, "with lettering, an artist never corrects by erasing, but always paints over the error. So I decided to use what artists use. I put some tempera water-base paint in a bottle and took my watercolor brush to the office. And I used that to correct my mistakes."

Graham secretly used her white correction paint for five years. Some bosses admonished her against using it, but her coworkers frequently sought her paint out. She eventually began marketing her typewriter correction fluid as "Mistake Out" in 1956.

In 1979 she sold "Liquid Paper" to the Gillette Corporation for USD$47.5 million. At the time, her company employed 200 people and made 25 million bottles of Liquid Paper per year.

Bette Nesmith's son, former Monkees member Michael Nesmith, inherited the $50+ million estate of Liquid Paper upon her death on 12 May 1980. Bette Nesmith was 56 years of age.

CONTACT LENSES

Adolf Eugen Fick (born 3 September, 1829, in Kassel, Germany; died 21 August, 1901, in Blankenberghe, Flandern) was a German physiologist usually credited with the invention of contact lenses. He earned a 1851 doctorate at Marburg in medicine.

In 1855 he introduced Fick's law of diffusion, which governs the diffusion of a gas across a fluid membrane. In 1870 he was the first to devise a technique for measuring cardiac output, called the Fick Principle. In 1887 he constructed and fitted what was to be considered the first successful model of a contact lens: an afocal scleral contact shell made from heavy brown glass, which he tested first on rabbits, then on himself, and lastly on a small group of volunteers. His idea was advanced independently by several innovators in the years that followed.

Fick managed to double-publish his law of diffusion, as it applied equally to physiology and physics.

PAPER

Paper was invented by Cai Lun in 105 AD, which was one of the fourgreat inventions by the Chinese. Cai Lun not only greatly improved thepapermaking technique, but also made it possible to use a variety ofmaterials, such as tree bark, hemp, rags, etc. The earliest paperdiscovered in Fufeng County, Shaanxi, was made from hemp during theWestern Han (206 BC - 24 AD). Bamboo paper wasproduced in the Tang Dynasty (608 - 907). Xuan paper made in JingCounty, Anhui, is probably the best-known paper, which is mainly usedin Chinese painting and calligraphy. Xuan paper is soft, smooth, white, absorbent and very durable.
Papermaking was introduced to Korea and Vietnam during the 3rd century and to the West around the 8th century. The first paper mill in Europe was built in 1009.

The Watch

The first watch was made by Kutbi, a renowned watch-maker of his time. During the Abbasidreign the use of a watch became quite common and the famous Harun-ar-Rashid oncedespatched a watch as a gift to his celebrated contemporary, the French EmperorCharlemagne. At that time a watch was considered a novel thing in Europe and was regardedas an object of wonder.
Mustansariya, the well-known university of Baghdad had a uniqueclock with a dial blue like the sky and a sun which continually moved over its surfacedenoting the time. Maulana Shibli, the famous Urdu litterateur, has described a watch ofDamascus in the following words:
"The watch was kept in the door of a wall. Itcontained copper plates and twelve doors. There was an Eagle (Bat) standing in the Ist andthe last plate. At the end of each hour, these two eagles lay down on the copper platesand hence a sound was produced to show the time. At twelve all the doors were closed. Thissystem was being repeated continuously".
The construction of water clocks was alsocommon in Islamic Countries. "The Arabs were skilful in the construction ofclepsydras and water clocks with automata," says a European writer.

The Mariners Compass

The invention of Mariners Compass, which revolutionised sea borne commerce and oceanicshipping and enabled the Arabs to roam over the stormy seas in quest of new lands andadditional markets for their commodities, is essentially a contribution of the Muslims tothe world of science.
Knowledge about the properties of the needle, can no doubt be tracedto Chinese sources, but putting it into working shape, in the form of a mariners' compass, was the achievement of Muslim scientists. The compass was probably invented for thepurpose of finding out the Qibla for Prayers.

Asal Usul Lagu Negaraku

BAR CODE
Barcodes (also called Universal Product Codes or UPC's) are small, codedlabels that contain information about the item they are attached to;the information is contained in a numerical code, usually containing 12digits. UPC's are easily scanned by laser beams. UPC's are used on manythings, including most items for sale in stores, library books, inventory items, many packages and pieces of luggage being shipped, railroad cars, etc. The UPC may contain coded information about theitem, its manufacturer, place of origin, destination, the owner, orother data. The first "bullseye code" was invented by Norman JosephWoodland and Bernard Silver, from work which they began in 1948. OnOctober 20, 1949, they patented their bullseye code (a series ofconcentric circles that were scannable from all directions, usingregular light). Woodland and Silver patented a new UPC in October 1952;the UPC was also improved and adapted by David J. Collins in the late1950's (to track railroad cars). UPC's were first used in grocerystores in the early 1970's.

Kretek IPA: /ˈkriːtɛk/ (or clove) are cigarettes made with a complex blend of tobacco, cloves and a flavoring 'sauce'. The word "kretek" itself is an onomatopoetic term for the crackling sound of burning cloves.
Haji Jamahri, a resident of Kudus, Java, created kreteks in the early 1880s as a means to deliver the medicinal eugenol of cloves to the lungs, as it was thought to help asthma. It cured his chest pains and he started to market his invention to the village, but he died before he could mass market it. M. Nitisemito took his place and began to commercialize the new cigarettes. Today, kretek manufacturers directly employ over 180,000 people in Indonesia and an additional 10 million indirectly.[1]

Partly due to favorable taxation compared to "white" cigarettes,[2] kreteks are by far the most widely-smoked form of cigarettes in Indonesia, where about 90% of smokers usually smoke kreteks.[3] In Indonesia, there are hundreds of kretek manufacturers, including small local makers and major brands. Most of the widely-known international brands, including Bentoel, Djarum, Gudang Garam, Jakarta, Sampoerna, Dji Sam Soe, and Wismilak, originate from Indonesia. Nat Sherman of the United States produces cigarettes branded as "A Touch of Clove" but are arguably not kreteks since they contain clove flavoring in the filter rather than actual clove spice mixed with the tobacco.[4]

saper cipta microchip

Geoffrey William Arnold Dummer, MBE (1945), C.Eng., IEE Premium Award, FIEEE, MIEE, USA Medal of Freedom with Bronze Palm (February 25, 1909 – September 16, 2002) is a British electronics author and consultant who is credited as being the first person to conceptualise the integrated circuit, commonly called the microchip, in the late-1940s and early 1950s. Dummer passed the first radar trainers and became a pioneer of reliability engineering at the Telecommunications Research Establishment in Malvern in the 1940s.

Born in Hull, Dummer studied electrical engineering at Manchester College of Technology starting in the early 1930s. By the early 1940s he was working at the Telecommunications Research Establishment in Malvern (later to become the Royal Radar Establishment).

His work with colleagues at TRE led him to the belief that it would be possible to fabricate multiple circuit elements on and into a substance like silicon. In 1952 he presented his work at a conference in Washington, DC, some six years before Jack Kilby of Texas Instruments was awarded a patent for essentially the same idea. As a result he has been called "The Prophet of the Integrated Circuit"

Dummer was admitted to a Nursing home in Malvern in 2000 due to a stroke and died in September 2002, aged 93.

Teori 1: "Kicap" ertinya 茄汁 : 茄 adalah aksara Hanzi untuk terung (labu) atau tomato (番茄).
Sebutan dalam bahasa Kantonis moden: 茄 (ke4) 汁 (jap1)

LIGHTER
The first lighter, Döbereiner's lamp, was invented by Johann Wolfgang Döbereiner in 1823. It stayed in production until 1880.

The development of lighters accelerated during the first World War. Soldiers used matches to find their way in the dark, but the intense initial flare of matches gave away their position, and many lives were lost because of this. So the need for fire without a large initial flare was born. Inventors started improving the design of lighters and by 1918 when the war ended, they were able to be produced fast, easier and cheaper. KLCC

Designed by Argentine-American architect César Pelli, the Petronas Towers were completed in 1998 and became the tallest buildings in the world on the date of completion. They were built on the site of Kuala Lumpur's race track. Because of the depth of the bedrock, the buildings were built on the world's deepest foundations. The 120-meter foundations were built by Bachy Soletanche, and required massive amounts of concrete.

The 88-floor towers are constructed largely of reinforced concrete, with a steel and glass façade designed to resemble motifs found in Islamic art, a reflection of Malaysia's Muslim religion. Another Islamic influence on the design is that the cross-section of the towers is based on a Rub el Hizb (albeit with circular sectors added to meet office space requirements).

In an unusual move, a different construction company was hired for each of the towers. According to both a National Geographic documentary and a Korean newspaper, Tower 2 was successfully completed by Samsung Constructions, Kukdong Engineering & Construction (both of South Korea). The builders of Tower 1, Hazama Corporation found a problem during the construction, the tower was estimated to lean 25mm on the ground with its own weight. While Hazama's work to fix the problem, Samsung Constructions completed their work. Finally, the Tower 2 construction team succeeded one month earlier than tower 1. [5] [6]. Due to a lack of steel and the huge cost of importing steel, the towers were constructed on a cheaper radical design of super high-strength reinforced concrete. High-strength concrete is a material familiar to Asian contractors and twice as effective as steel in sway reduction; however, it makes the building twice as heavy on its foundation than a comparable steel building. Supported by 23-by-23 meter concrete cores and an outer ring of widely-spaced super columns, the towers use a sophisticated structural system that accommodates its slender profile and provides from 1300 to 2000 square metres of column-free office space per floor.

Below the twin towers is Suria KLCC, a popular shopping mall, and Dewan Filharmonik Petronas, the home of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra.

Petronas, Malaysia's national oil company, set out to build the world's tallest building. Although other buildings such as the Sears Tower have higher occupied floors, a higher antenna, and a higher roof, the Petronas Twin Towers' spires are classified as architectural details and rise to 452 m (1483 feet), giving it the greatest structural height until Taipei 101. Taking advantage of the rules governing building measurements (counting spires but not antennas) has generated controversy over the towers' claim to the title. However, the tradition of including the spire on top of a building and not including the antenna dates back to the rivalry between the Chrysler Building and the 40 Wall Street.

Other buildings have used spires to increase their height but have always been taller overall to the pinnacle when trying to claim the title. In the aftermath of the controversy, the rules governing official titles were partially overhauled, and a number of buildings re-classified structural antenna as architectural details to boost their height rating (even though nothing was actually done to the building).

postage stamp.

Lovrenc Košir, also Laurenz Koschier (29 July 1804 in Spodnja Lusa, Austria (now Slovenia) — 7 August 1879 in Vienna) was an Austrian civil servant who worked in Ljubljana. Besides Rowland Hill and James Chalmers, he is said to be the inventor of the postage stamp.

In 1835, five years before the introduction of the worldwide first stamps in Great Britain, he suggested the introduction of adhesive tax postmarks (aufklebbare Brieftaxstempel) to the Department of Commerce in Vienna, which was responsible for the postal system. These postmarks were to be used for the pre-payment of postage. He called them gepresste Papieroblate (pressed paper wafers), which are known today as stamps. His suggestion was looked at in detail, but rejected for the time being.

Lovrenc Košir conceived that the stamps would be modelled on the official sealing stamps that were already used in Austria. However because he had contact with England, it is presumed that he got the idea from James Chalmers, who had already made stamp designs one year earlier than Košir. However, Chalmers did not submit his designs until three years after Lovrenc Košir's suggestion.

Košir was immortalised by Yugoslavia on several commemorative stamps. The country very much supported Lovrenc Košir being recognised as the one and only inventor of the postage stamp. On 21 August 1948, a commemorative stamp set was issued, which consisted of four stamps and showed his portrait. In the same year, the Yugoslavian postal system issued an airmail stamp depicting Lovrenc Košir, his hometown of Ljubljana, and an aeroplane. What is special about these stamps is the allonge attached to each stamp. It has an inscription in Yugoslavian and in French giving information about Lovrenc Košir's contribution regarding the invention of stamps.
