Real Madrid want Cristiano Ronaldo to declare his interest in a move to Santiago Bernabeu before opening talks with Manchester United.

The on-going transfer saga over the future of the prodigiously-gifted Portugal international has dominated the headlines in recent weeks.

Real have made no secret of their admiration for Ronaldo, with United responding by reporting the Spanish champions to Fifa for their actions, although the world governing body will not be taking any formal action.

Ronaldo has done little to quell the speculation, but insists he will not make any decision over his future until after Euro 2008, with Portugal facing Germany in the opening quarter-final clash.

Now Real claim they are waiting for Ronaldo to give them the green light to open transfer negotiations with the Old Trafford outfit.

"We are waiting for Ronaldo to say something, and as soon as he says he wants to play for Real Madrid there will be conversations between the two clubs," Real's director general of the presidency Miguel Angel Arroyo told Marca.

"We would willingly reach an agreement with Manchester United if it is possible, that is to say, if they want to sell and if the price was affordable."

If Ronaldo does eventually move to Real, he will be one of a limited number of summer signings, with the club not planning a major summer overhaul.

"Things are a little dependent on what happens at Euro 2008. There is a lot of speculation but that is normal," Real coach Bernd Schuster told Spanish radio station Cope.

"I have already said there will be very few new faces."

Roma Step Up Interest In Saha And Silvestre

The Italian capital club have been one of the most active sides in the transfer market this week, and fresh from having sealed the signing of Liverpool wide-man John Arne Riise, they are now allegedly actively trying to recruit more unsettled Premiership stars.

Harry Kewell has been touted as a serious target earlier today, while the Italian press is reporting that Roma are trying to engineer a one-year loan deal for Saha and Silvestre with the option of signing them permanently at the end of next season.

Saha is no longer thought to be a part of Sir Alex Ferguson's immediate plans at Old Trafford as a string of bad injuries have seen him fall firmly behind the pecking order of United strikers. The Frenchman's contract expires in 2010 but it would seem that the Red Devils are keen to offload him to free up space for another forward.

Silvestre, in the meanwhile, has been strongly tipped to make a return to his homeland, but even Bordeaux's chief scout recently admitted that they would be unable to compete financially with Roma.

Arsenal To Lose Arshavin

Zenit St Petersburg have revealed that they expect Russian International Andrei Arshavin to join Tottenham Hotspur within five days.

Spurs have been linked with a move for 27-year-old Arshavin since the Russian starred at EURO 2008, with Zenit now inviting Tottenham to make an offer upwards of £20million (€25.4m) to bring the talented forward to White Hart Lane.

Arshavin’s agent Dennis Lachter confirmed on Wednesday that Arshavin had chosen to join Spurs, despite interest from Arsenal, Chelsea and La Liga giants Barcelona, also revealing that the North London club had made an approach for Arshavin.

However, Spurs are reluctant to pay the Zenit asking price, even though the £20million sale to Liverpool of Robbie Keane means Tottenham manager Juande Ramos has the funds available to bring Arshavin to the Premier League.

Zenit spokesman Konstantin Sarsaniya has now revealed that talks with Spurs are ongoing and that the deal could be concluded in the next five days.

Sarsaniya told sports.ru: “We have certain contacts with Tottenham, but when they will conclude, I still do not know.

On Tuesday night, Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahim, the front-man for ADUG, said: ‘I’m happy and really excited to have Robinho at this club, but we wanted both of the players. We would have had both of them if we could.

‘I’m going to see the performance in the first half of the season and then we’ll decide what we do on transfers at the halfway stage. Ronaldo has said he wants to play for the biggest club in the world, so we will see in January if he is serious.

‘Real Madrid were estimating his value at $160million (£89m) but for a player like that, to actually get him, will cost a lot more. I would think $240m (£135m). But why not? We are going to be the biggest club in the world, bigger than both Real Madrid and Manchester United.’

It was thought Al-Fahim was mischiefmaking with his comments about United, but, asked later in the day by Sportsmail about his ambitions for City, he suggested that the club’s owners have indeed set their sights on toppling United.

He added: ‘Manchester is a big city, one of the biggest for football in the UK. I can’t say we’re necessarily going to be bigger than United because every club has the right to grow and might do so, but we certainly believe we can challenge them from now on.’

Speculation had linked the former Real Madrid and Roma striker with a switch to the Barclays Premier League club but Samp administrator Beppe Marotta insisted he is not for sale.

"Regarding the interest of Manchester City for Cassano I must say that Antonio will not leave Genoa in January," Marotta said.

"Since he arrived at Sampdoria, Antonio has delighted us with his fantastic play and it's normal that this will attract interest from great clubs in Europe, including Manchester City.

The supposed 'Richest Club In the World' have made the Valencia hitman their number one target when the transfer window re-opens in January.

They shocked the football world by pinching Robinho from under Chelsea's noses on transfer deadline day in August, and now Manchester City are planning an audacious bid to team up the brilliant Brazilian with the dynamic Spaniard.

Reports from magazine 'The People' suggest that manager Mark Hughes has earmarked Villa, who finished top scorer at Euro 2008 and currently leads the race for the Pichichi in La Liga, as the man to score the goals to take City to the next level as serious challengers to the top four.

Former Barcelona player Hughes has issued a glowing report to the clubs owners in order for them to launch an enquiry regarding the players availability.

The report also suggests that a bid of 50m Euros is to be tabled to test Valencia's resilience, but the question remains whether Villa will want to move away from the Mestalla, having apparently rejected the advances of Real Madrid over the summer. Redknapp to battle Liverpool for £15m Argentine international

Fernando Cavenaghi, currently playing for Ligue 1 team Bordeaux, is reportedly being chased by new Tottenham Hotspurs manager Harry Redknapp in addition to Premiership rivals Liverpool.

Canenaghi, as a striker, would help fill in the shocking lack of striking talent at White Hart Lane, with only Pavlyuchenko, Bent, and Campbell as the only recognised forwards. Redknapp is also expected to push for a transfer for Portsmouth and England International forward Jermain Defoe in January.

Cavenaghi has scored 22 goals in 35 appearances for Bordeaux, and his valuation currently stands at around £15m. A move to White Hart Lane seems more likely at the moment, given that Benitez will have to sell off players to raise the funds to purchase Cavenaghi, a barrier that new Spurs manager Redknapp wont face.

Scolari still keen on Robinho

Reports from Brazil suggest Chelsea coach Luiz Felipe Scolari would still love to take Brazil ace Robinho to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues trailed the winger throughout the summer, but then saw Manchester City nip in to sign him from Real Madrid for £32million on transfer deadline day.

Despite that near miss it appears Scolari is still keen on the 24-year-old.

"I am sure that Robinho would be the best player in the world if he came to play at Chelsea," he told Brazilian daily O Globo.

"The Chelsea doors are always open to him."

Robinho has so far made 11 Premier League starts for City, scoring eight times in the process.

David Villa Edges Closer To Manchester City

According to the News of the World, David Villa's agent will fly to England in the next few days to further negotiations for a €60 million transfer from Valencia to Manchester City.

The Sunday tabloid claims that the Spanish international will be offered wages of €185,000 per week - a figure which would make him, alongside Robinho, the Premier League's top-earning player.

Mark Hughes, the Sky Blues manager, has been scouring Europe for an ideal front-man to complement his Brazilian magician. Jo has struggling for form, Benjani is generally not seen as first-choice material and Valeri Bojinov still out with a long-term injury.

Klaas Jan-Huntelaar was another of the Welshman's top targets, but his decision to join Real Madrid recently could prove a boon for the Eastlands club as it has effectively ruled them out of the running for Villa.
